Walters: California’s economic outlook remains muddy and mediocre

Walters: California’s economic outlook remains muddy and mediocre Late last month, the Federal Reserve announced the latest incremental raise in its key interest rate, pushing it to the highest level in 22 years, as it continues to battle what it calls persistent inflation. The increase, a quarter of 1%, renewed the debate among economists and politicians over whether the Federal Reserve’s anti-inflation actions will slow the economy into what’s termed a “soft landing,” or ignite a recession. The recession that many economists thought would have happened by now hasn’t raised its ugly head, leading to I-Told-You-So’s from the ones who hadn’t seen a downturn on the horizon.“Much to the chagrin of those who have been predicting otherwise, the U.S. economy has stubbornly continued to grow and 2023 is shaping up to be a better year than 2022,” one of the optimists, California economist Christopher Thornberg wrote recently.“This isn’t to say that we don’t recognize signs of stress in the economy driven by higher interest rates and the recent bout of infla...

Georgia prosecutors have messages showing Trump’s team is behind voting system breach

Georgia prosecutors have messages showing Trump’s team is behind voting system breach (CNN) — Atlanta-area prosecutors investigating efforts to overturn the 2020 election results in Georgia are in possession of text messages and emails directly connecting members of Donald Trump’s legal team to the early January 2021 voting system breach in Coffee County, sources tell CNN. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis is expected to seek charges against more than a dozen individuals when her team presents its case before a grand jury next week. Several individuals involved in the voting systems breach in Coffee County are among those who may face charges in the sprawling criminal probe. Investigators in the Georgia criminal probe have long suspected the breach was not an organic effort sprung from sympathetic Trump supporters in rural and heavily Republican Coffee County – a county Trump won by nearly 70% of the vote. They have gathered evidence indicating it was a top-down push by Trump’s team to access sensitive voting software, according to people familiar w...

Fourth Trump indictment appears imminent

Fourth Trump indictment appears imminent A Georgia prosecutor appears on the verge of bringing criminal charges in her investigation into former President Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in that state. Two witnesses confirmed Saturday that they will appear before a grand jury in Fulton County, Ga., early next week — the clearest sign yet that Fani Willis, the district attorney there, soon plans to ask the grand jury to approve criminal indictments against Trump or his allies. If Trump is charged in Georgia, it would be his fourth indictment in the past five months. He is already facing federal criminal charges over 2020 election interference and his hoarding of classified documents, as well as New York criminal charges related to hush money payments. The Fulton County indictment would cap off a yearslong investigation into the former president’s efforts to change the outcome of the Georgia election, which Joe Biden narrowly won. In the weeks after Election Day, Trump spread fal...

Toyota recalls Tundra models in largest recall this year New York (CNN) — Toyota has issued a voluntary recall for certain 2022 and 2023 Tundra and Tundra Hybrid trucks in its largest recall of 2023.The manufacturer announced Thursday 168,000 vehicles in the US have a plastic fuel tube which could “rub against a brake line and develop a fuel leak.” The leak could potentially cause a fire “in the presence of an ignition source,” Toyota added. The company will replace the tube for free and is preparing to make the replacement parts available. In the meantime, Toyota said its dealers “will install protective materials and a clamp on the fuel tube at no cost to customers.”Toyota will notify vehicle owners who are affected by the faulty part by early October. Owners can visit Toyota.com/recall and enter either their VIN number or license plate information to see whether their car is included in the recall. This is the seventh recall involving the 2022 or 2023 Tundra model. Mishmash of how US heat deaths are counted complicates efforts to keep people safe as Earth warms

Mishmash of how US heat deaths are counted complicates efforts to keep people safe as Earth warms PHOENIX (AP) — Postal worker Eugene Gates Jr. was delivering mail in the suffocating Dallas heat this summer when he collapsed in a homeowner’s yard and was taken to a hospital, where he died. Carla Gates said she’s sure heat was a factor in her 66-year-old husband’s death, even though she’s still waiting for the autopsy report. When Eugene Gates died on June 20, the temperature was 98 degrees Fahrenheit (36.6 Celsius) and the heat index, which also considers humidity, had soared over 110 degrees Fahrenheit (43.3 Celsius). “I will believe this until the day I die, that it was heat-related,” Carla Gates said. Even when it seems obvious that extreme heat was a factor, death certificates don’t always reflect the role it played. Experts say a mishmash of ways more than 3,000 counties calculate heat deaths means we don’t really know how many people die in the U.S. each year because of high temperatures in an ever warming world. That imprecision h...
